What is Brain Health?

Brain health encompasses the state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social-emotional, behavioral, and motor domains. This state allows individuals to realize their full potential throughout their lives, regardless of any disorders.

Determinants of Brain Health

Factors such as physical health, environmental conditions, lifelong learning, social connections, and access to quality services play critical roles in brain development, adaptation, and response to stress and adversity. Addressing these determinants can enhance overall mental and physical well-being, leading to positive social and economic impacts.

Global Burden of Brain Health Disorders

Neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions contribute significantly to the global disease burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Conditions like stroke, migraine, dementia, meningitis, and epilepsy are leading causes of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and account for millions of deaths annually. The disparity in resources for treating these conditions is stark, with low-income countries having significantly fewer medical professionals and resources dedicated to brain health.

WHO's Response to Brain Health Challenges

In response to the global brain health crisis, WHO has launched the Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders 2022–2031. This plan aims to improve care, recovery, well-being, and participation of individuals with neurological disorders. Key initiatives include strengthening policies, service delivery, health information systems, and research, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Future Directions

Efforts to improve brain health require multisectoral and interdisciplinary collaborations focusing on prevention, treatment, care, and rehabilitation. Involving people with lived experiences, their families, and carers is essential to developing effective strategies and policies. The continued investment in brain health is crucial for achieving greater societal well-being and advancing global health objectives.
